Strong effort by Dave Henderson at British XC Championships

Bike-race-at-pippingford

The 2010 British XC Champs took place at the weekend (July 18th) at Pippingford Estate, East Sussex. Since I was on annual leave we decided to travel down earlier in the week and to visit Becs`s family. This allowed me to focus on good preparation for the race having done the long drive and having no distractions like working on the house.

A practice lap on the Saturday revealed why the Southern XC Series use this course so much! With sweet singletrack, bomb holes, super fast descents with berms that forced you to hit even harder each time, jumps and a river crossing, this was shaping up to be a fun course. Oh and of course some climbing in between, both short energy sapping power climbs as well as a couple of longer slogs. Hard to believe we were in the south of England!  I have to admit it, I was pleasantly surprised! All the hype was justified. I knew one thing, regardless of the outcome I was going to enjoy this race... it was an awesome course.

Dave Henderson tackles penultimate BMBS round at Dalby

The penultimate round of the British Mountain Bike Series (BMBS) used the World Cup course at Dalby Forest in North Yorkshire. The course was basically the WC course but without the fun park known as Dixons Hollow.  On practice day, I planned to do just one lap since I know the course fairly well but couldn`t resist doing a second! It is a brilliant course.

Dave Henderson makes the podium again

Pedal Power mountain bike race, Dave Henderson, reports from his latest race at Fort William.

The 4th round of the Dale’s Cycles Scottish XC Series which also incorporated the Scottish Championships took place on Sunday 13th June. The course was held on the slopes of Anoch Mor, just outside Fort William.

A pre-ride with Jamie Maxwell (Edinburgh University Cycling Club/ Off beat bikes) confirmed a great course with maximum climbing and super fast and technical descents. To be honest I think it’s difficult to have anything but an awesome course in this part of the country! Last year, I managed 3rd overall and silver in the champs. My aim this year was the gold! We stayed with the Maxwell`s for the weekend so the preparation was good with a pasta feast the night before and just chilling out watching the football.

TOP TEN for Dave Henderson in BMBS

Margam04

Last weekend saw a wet and muddy Margam Park in Wales host the third round of the British Mountain Bike Series (BMBS). Despite the course being dry during a pre-ride on Friday, on Saturday it was a mud bath. I quickly learnt that Racing Ralphs are NOT designed for the mud! The first couple of laps were comical trying to negotiate through it. By lap 3 I was starting to get the hang of it, the 4th I enjoyed and the 5th was just about getting round with a bike that was somehow still managing to function despite having grass, mud and ferns caught up in my crank set, derailleur and any other possible place.

Dale’s Cycles SXC Series Round 3 - Aberfoyle

Aberfoyle_4_2

On Saturday 22nd May, I headed to Aberfoyle with Allan Clark to do pre-ride the course for the 3rd round of the Dale’s Cycles SXC hosted by Squadra Porcini. The course was totally different to last year`s and the weather the opposite; scorching sunshine in the mid twenties. I tried to take it easy during the practice laps which proved impossible due to the heat and the steep climbs including the appropriately named “heart attack hill”. I did two laps and then got out the sun. Allan decided to do another lap as he wouldn`t be racing the Sunday on the advice from his physio. Very sensible, especially for a mountain biker!
